Comparison of the development of the Czech and Polish ballet scene in the years 1945 - 1970

This dissertation delves into the fascinating world of ballet, one of the most expressive and fantastic artistic disciplines. Its primary focus is to analyse and compare the development of the Czech and Polish ballet scene between 1945 and 1970 in order to shed light on certain key phases and issues, such as the emancipation and recognition of ballet as a specific artistic discipline. The dissertation also focuses on the career paths of ballet dancers, examining the advantages and disadvantages associated with this career, including financial reward. The structure of the thesis is divided into seven key chapters (source evaluation, methodological section, five thematic chapters), supplemented by an introduction, conclusion, lists and appendices. The first chapter focuses on significant changes in the interwar period, which are considered essential for understanding the development of the post-war ballet scene in Czechoslovakia and Poland. The chapter also focuses on the personalities whose legacy influenced subsequent generations of ballet artists. Jiri Trnka's Scenography in the National Theatre

Jiri Trnka (1912 - 1969) ranks among the foremost representatives of Czech modern art in the 20th century and alongside the most remarkable protagonists of the visual art scene over a period ranging from the late 1930s through the end of the1960s. He stood out within that movement for his multiple talents, as a draughtsman, book illustrator, puppet designer, painter, animated film-maker, sculptor and stage designer. He achieved admirable success in these fields of activity. In the early 40s a new prospect opened up for him connected with work in theatre, as he took up the post of stage designer at the National Theatre in Prague, an assignment which enabled him to put to use his specific talent for stagecraft. He created 13 stage decorations together. Trnka was able to create unforgettable productions thanks the cooperation with Jiri Frejka or Karel Dostal. I documented and explained Trnka's work in the context of the Nation Theatre during the Second World War. I defined his style in the relation to his contemporaries in the end of work. The National Theatre during the "Normalization Era"

The aim of the thesis is to present the functioning of the National Theatre in Prague under the ideological supervision of the ruling Communist Party in the years 1968-1989. The included chapters aim to provide a comprehensive picture of cultural policy during the so-called normalization period. In these conditions, the National Theatre also carried out its activities. The first part deals with the socio-historical context and selected events that influenced further political developments in the country. The entry of Warsaw Pact troops into Czechoslovakia led to a change in the existing conditions, consolidating power and censorship. Therefore, the second part describes the Czechoslovak cultural state apparatus, individual institutions, and their activities during the defined period. It explores how the state regulated culture and the censorship regulations that were enforced. The third part generally presents the impact of the political changes after 1968 on the theater scene. The fourth pivotal part of the work focuses directly on the National Theatre, not only on its dramatic and staging directions but also on its selected personalities. Poetics of selected dramas from the Krejča's era of the National Theater

This bachelor's thesis deals with the motif of everyday life, which came to the fore in the second half of the 1950s, not only for ordinary people, but also for writers, poets and playwrights. In particular, it examines the degree of importance of the motif of everyday life in the plays written for the National Theatre during the period when Otomar Krejča and his "dramaturgical workshop" were active there. For the typological analysis, five plays were selected which premieres took place at the Tyl Theatre in 1958-1963, namely František Hrubín's August Sunday and Crystal Night, Josef Topol's Their Day, František Pavlíček's Match with the Angel and Milan Kundera's The Owners of the Keys. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether the motif of everyday life is what defines the poetics of the original plays written for the National Theatre. The National Theatre Podcast

This bachelor's thesis deals with the podcast of the Czech National Theater, which was launched in January 2020. It is one of the podcasts created in response to COVID-19 restrictions. When theatres had to be closed, the National Theater was searching for new ways to reach its audience - and in cooperation with STORYLAB AUDIO, they launched a podcast in which the theatre was presented in a new perspective. They created a format that translates - largely visual - theatrical art into a sound medium. The result is a quality narrative podcast which can be an example of the beginning professionalization of podcasting in the Czech Republic. The practical part of this thesis is in the form of a "podcast about a podcast". It contains interviews in which the creators of the podcast of the National Theater talk about its making, they explain its goals, challenges, benefits. Also, it contains a survey in which people from the audience of the National Theater answer the question of whether they know and listen to the podcast of the National Theater. One of the aims of this work is to place the podcast of the National Theater in a broader context - in the practical part, this is done within an interview with a media expert. Tableau Vivant and its Practice in the Czech Milieu of the Second Half of the 19th Century

The thesis explores the phenomenon of so-called living pictures, often internationally known under the French translation of the phrase - as tableaux vivants (in singular form a tableau vivant). It is a type of theatrical performance and a paratheatrical genre performed by participants in costumes who, for a short time, motionlessly maintain a certain position, so that the whole scene resembles a work of art - most often a picture, as the term suggests. As templates for the scene composition were selected famous paintings (contemporary audience then amused themselves by identifying them and by the illusion of the picture "brought to life", which the production evoked), but also sculptures; some scenes were designed from scratch, as in the case of so-called Apotheosis (a living picture meant for glorification of a certain personality) and various allegories, in the Czech milieu often with patriotic overtones. A living picture therefore had many forms, and also a variety of different functions - entertaining, aesthetic, communicating or for instance representational, which is associated with aristocratic families in particular and in our lands very considerably with the Sokol organization. Czech drama in the twenties of the 20th century

This thesis focuses on the issue of Czech drama in the twenties of the 20th century. Specifically, it focuses on the repertoire of the National Theatre. In the first chapters, the state of drama in this period is briefly analysed. In next chapters, dramas are selected that were written by the Czech writers others than the Čapek brothers and introduced in the twenties of the 20th century. Three thematic pairs of dramas were chosen from this limited selection for the purpose of further analysis and comparison. The core and most important elements are the analysis and comparison of pairs of dramas whereas every pair composes of one successful and one unsuccessful drama. All dramas were introduced at the National Theatre in the twenties and all of them were considered as an average when compared to the work of the Čapek brothers. Furthermore, the analysis and comparison of every pair is accompanied by the contemporary critics and reviews published in the newspapers. The Influence of Political Systems and Ideologies on the National Theatre Ballet in Prague in the 20th Century

Název v anglickém jazyce: The Influence of Political Systems and Ideologies on the National Theatre Ballet in Prague in the 20th Century The subject of the Thesis is the influence of political systems and ideologies on the National Theatre Ballet in Prague. The period of research spans mainly from the theatre season 1923/1924, when Remislav Remislavský was appointed the post of ballet master and choreographer, to the season 1989/1990, when Vlastimil Harapes assumed the post of the ensemble's chief. Two main periods are underlined: the period of World War II and the subsequent period of the Communist Party government after 1948. Persons of interest are mainly the bosses of ballet company for example Jelizaveta Nikolská, Joe Jenčík, Saša Machov or Jiří Němeček st. and others, but also soloists, and the repertoire of the ballet corps. This thesis is a scope of the evolution of ballet of National theatre in concern of political changes in 20th century.

Prague ballet scene and its main leaders of the 2nd half of the 20th century.

This diploma thesis deals with the Prague ballet scene and its important representatives during the second half of the 20th century. The study aims to provide a concise summary of a topic that has not been covered so far and holds great potential for further research. The effort is to capture life stories of several eminent personalities of the ballet scene in the area of dance, choreography and teaching. In addition, the author maps events which had a significant impact on the ballet scene both in terms of theatrical and historical milestones. The chosen problems are approached by using theme-oriented literature reviews and processing of archival documents. The method of oral history is used as part of the research. The contribution of this thesis lies in its concise mapping of the Prague ballet scene and the profession of a ballet artist with all its possible pros and cons. Most importantly, it also serves as commemoration of personalities who had an unforgettable influence on the history of this art form.
